9-28-10  18.2 percent of South Dakota children live in poverty – New census data paints grim picture

Child poverty in South Dakota increased to 18.2 percent in 2009 from 16.4 percent in 2007. According to Census Bureau data released today, 34,671 South Dakota children are poor. The child poverty rate in South Dakota continues to be significantly higher than our neighboring states.  Total poverty rates were at 14.2 percent for 2009.   Poverty is defined as a household income of less than $22,050 for a family of four.
